Do you need someone to remove and reinstall your solar panel system in the Chicago area? Certasun can likely help, whether we originally installed your system or not.
Our Solar Panel Removal & Reinstallation page discusses what to expect from a project like this, but who should you choose to do it?
If your system is owned by a third party (because you leased it or have a power purchase agreement), you should read your contract and reach out to the owner. Because your system is owned by this third party, they probably retain the right to decide who will work on it. Check with them before you contact anyone else.
If you own your system, is the original installer still in business and willing to work with you? They are probably your best bet. They will already have the system plans, so they’ll know all about your system without you having to send them information about it. Besides, if they offered any kind of warranty with the system having anyone else work on it would likely void that warranty.
Unfortunately, however, many solar companies have come and gone. For example, if you need a solar remove & reinstall for a system installed by Freedom Forever, SunPower, GRNE, Summit Solar, ADT Solar, Sun Badger, or Revolution Energy, someone like Certasun can help.
Here are some questions to ask potential candidates:
- How much solar experience do you have overall, and in Illinois? Certasun has installed more residential solar in Illinois than any other company headquartered here.
- How much experience do you have with remove & reinstall projects? As one of the oldest solar companies in Illinois (we were founded in 2018), we’ve done hundreds of solar detach and reset projects.
- Do you have a dedicated service department? Certasun has field teams devoted only to remove & reinstall projects, and our office-based support team will ensure your project goes smoothly.
- Do you have experience with, and are you certified to work on, the kind of equipment I have? Certasun has extensive experience with Enphase, Maxeon, Qcells, REC, SolarEdge, SunPower, and Tesla equipment. Our technicians are trained and certified to work on these products.
- What roof materials do you work with? Certasun works on standard asphalt shingle roofs, most residential flat roofs, and standing seam metal roofs. We do not work with slate, shake, clay tiles, or “engineered” shingles (such as those from Davinci).
- Will you coordinate with your roofing contractor? Certasun maintains relationships with most of the quality roofing contractors in the Chicago area. We are happy to coordinate with yours. Don’t have a roofer yet? We have recommendations.
- Will you handle permitting? Solar R&R projects generally do not require permits. However, we will handle it for you if your municipality or situation requires one. (It will be required if you want your panels moved to a different part of your house.)
- Do you provide a roof penetration warranty after your work? We warrant the penetrations we make in your roof will not leak for five years.
- Is the pricing you are offering a fixed fee or an estimate? Certasun’s solar remove & replace pricing is a fixed-fee, based on the number of panels you have. We will only charge more if we need to repair the system. We also pass through the cost of permits for R&R projects.
- What happens if something stops working or breaks? During a remove and reinstall project, components can be damaged or lost from contractor actions. At the same time, it’s also possible for solar equipment to have age-related issues that only become apparent when the system is taken offline, moved, and restarted. Our approach is straightforward: if we caused the problem, we will make it right. If an issue arises due to normal wear, age, or pre existing condition, we’re not responsible, but we will help you diagnose the issue and get your system back up and running.
