Occasionally, homeowners need to reconnect Enphase monitoring (also known as Envoy S or IQ Gateway) to Wi-Fi. We wrote this guide specifically for Certasun installations in Illinois and Wisconsin that have Enphase hardware.
Customers who were not originally installed by Certasun should contact Enphase at (877) 797-4743 for support directly, as their system configuration may differ from Certasun-installed systems.
(If you aren’t sure you have Enphase, see this post to determine which monitoring hardware you have.)

Enphase Hardware Outside
In Certasun installations, the Gateway is enclosed within a small protective box near your electric meter. Do not open this box during this process. You can reconnect your system successfully without doing so.
To begin this process, we’re going to prepare the Enphase Enlighten app. Then, we’re going to update the Enphase hardware.
Prepare your Enphase Enlighten app
Let’s begin by making sure you have the latest Enphase Enlighten app and have given it the necessary permissions.
(The examples we show below are from an iPhone. If you are using an Android device, the options may be slightly different, but the steps should be similar.)
Ensure you have the latest Enphase Enlighten app
Although we have our own phones to set up to automatically update apps, we found in writing this that there can be a delay of a few days before you actually get the latest version.
Here’s how to make sure you have the latest version:
- Open the App Store or Google Play Store app.
- Search for ‘Enphase Enlighten’.
- Tap the app’s listing, even if you see a button that says “Open”.
- Finally:
- If you see a “Get” button, click on it. You didn’t already have the app on your device.
- If you see an “Update” button, click on it. You didn’t already have the most recent version of the app.
- If you see an “Open” button, click on it – you already have the latest version of the app.
Ensure Enphase Enlighten has app permissions
Now, make sure the Enphase Enlighten app has the necessary permissions from your phone it needs to do the update successfully.
Missing app permissions will prevent the update procedure from working. Don’t skip this!
Individual customers’ experience may differ.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and touch “Apps”.
- Find and select Enphase Enlighten.
- Make sure the settings match the screen shot below:

Make sure you have access to your Enphase Enlighten account
Before troubleshooting, confirm that you can log in to your Enphase Enlighten account in the app.
If you’re unsure of your password, select “Forgot Password” on the app’s home screen to reset it.
If you don’t have an Enphase Enlighten account yet, create one through the app. You’ll need your Enphase Site ID, so please contact us if you need help locating this information.
Prepare your phone
We’re finally ready to actually update the Enphase. Just before you start the process, turn off the cellular data connection on your phone. The easiest way to do this is to turn on “Airplane Mode” just make sure Wi-Fi stays on (or turn it back on). However, you should keep your phone disconnected from your home Wi-Fi, with your Wi-Fi set as discoverable on your smartphone.
(During the update, your phone will connect to a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the Enphase. This Wi-Fi connection is used only so your phone can communicate directly to the Enphase Gateway. The Enphase Gateway does not provide internet access. However, modern phones don’t like Wi-Fi networks without internet! They often switch back to cellular data when they detect they are on Wi-Fi without internet access. If that happens in this case, the update process will fail. Turning off cellular data before starting the update makes sure your phone stays connected to the Enphase Gateway throughout the process. Activating “Airplane Mode” turns off cellular data).
Look for the monitoring network
After ensuring Airplane Mode is on and your Wi-Fi signal is strong, make sure you remain within six feet of your electric meter or circuit breaker panel for the rest of the directions. During the reconnection process, your phone will temporarily connect to a Wi-Fi network created by your monitoring device which allows your phone to pass your Wi-Fi information to the monitoring device.
Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your phone.
When the system is ready to reconnect, it will broadcast a temporary Wi-Fi network, named “ENVOY_######” where the last six digits represent the Gateway’s serial number. For our instruction purposes, we will refer to this network as “ENVOY_123456”.
If you see this network, skip to ‘Update your Monitoring Connection’.
If you do not see this network, continue to the next section to reset the monitoring breaker.
Reset the monitoring breaker
In most Certasun installations, the Gateway is powered by a breaker located in the breaker panel by your electric meter.
- Open the panel door. (You won’t be exposed to high voltage just by opening the door.)
- Now identify and switch off the breaker for the Enphase hardware, it should be labeled as “ENVOY”, “enphase”, or “monitoring”.
- Inside, you should see breakers labeled on the panel cover as shown below:

4. Once you locate the monitoring breaker: turn the breaker off, wait at least one full minute, and then the turn the breaker back on.
5. After restoring power, wait about 2 minutes, then check your available Wi-Fi networks again.
6. You should now see a network named ENVOY_123456. Once it appears, proceed to update your monitoring connection.
If you do not see this network, carefully repeat these steps. If you are still unable to get connected, contact our team at support@certasun.com, your monitoring system may be defective.
Update your monitoring connection
We are finally ready to update your connection! You need to remain within 6 feet of your Enphase for this part of the process.
- Open the Enphase Enlighten App and go to Profile / Wi-Fi settings.
- If you see ‘Gateway Not Reporting’, tap: ‘Connect Gateway to Internet’:

3. If you do not see this message: Go to Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Configure Wi-Fi:

4. At “Step 1” in the app, it will automatically go through the steps necessary to connect with your device. Tap Connect:

Tap Join to join the “ENVOY_123456” network. This will connect the Enphase monitoring device to your phone:

5. At “Step 2” in the app, your phone is now connected to the Gateway monitoring device. Click ‘Scan Wi-Fi Network’ to see a list of available networks. You will see this screen:

If you are unable to connect to the Gateway, reset the monitoring breaker. (see the “Reset Monitoring Breaker” section above)
If you are able to connect to the Gateway, select the Wi-Fi network you want the gateway to connect to (as shown below):

Enter the Wi-Fi network password and tap Join:

6. The Enphase App will confirm once the gateway has successfully connected to the Wi-Fi network:

7. You are done updating the Wi-Fi connection! Now is a good time do some housekeeping:
- Ensure all the breakers you turned off in your breaker panel are now on.
- Close the door to the panel.
- Turn off airplane mode on your phone.
- Reconnect your phone to your home’s main Wi-Fi network.
You did it!
Your Enphase monitoring system is now connected to Wi-Fi.
Your system will resume reporting data to the monitoring platform. It may take 24-48 hours for updated production information to appear in the app.
If you experience any issues or your system does not come back online, you might try again from the beginning or contact our support team at support@certasun.com and we’ll be happy to help.
